worked on the Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement project by
considering a $4 billion tunnel alternative. The alternative would
remove the Alaskan Way Viaduct structure and replace it with a six-lane
single-level tunnel located between the existing viaduct and the seawall.
This was a complex technical challenge in its own right. Even more
challenging are the urban planning, environmental and construction impacts
resulting from a project of this scope and complexity. The study offered a
number of substantial alternatives to the technical design that can result
in considerable cost and schedule savings while still maintaining project
quality. This is a multifaceted project with many tradeoffs, and various
options are still being considered.
